<h2>Keith Powers is a Democrat and life-long resident of Manhattan.</h2><p><strong>Born and raised in Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village — where he lives today — Keith has been serving the East Side of Manhattan since 2018.</strong></p><h4><span style="color: var(--color-text)">Keith has been a champion on housing issues in Manhattan and citywide.</span></h4><p><strong>He has been leading the charge on office conversions to housing, including a new rezoning in Midtown South.</strong></p><p>In 2019, he successfully helped senior citizens at Waterside Plaza negotiate a rent reduction that was lauded by The New York Times. He also joined the Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village tenants to successfully win a lawsuit to maintain rent stabilization for all residents. Keith has also passed numerous pieces of legislation that prevent housing discrimination and protect renters from overcharges.</p><p>He is a third-generation resident of Peter Cooper Village and Stuyvesant Town. Keith attended The CUNY Graduate Center and University of Dayton.</p>

In 2017, I advocated for the 14th Street busway in my first campaign. And it works: bus speeds have <a href="https://www.amny.com/news/busway-fines-three-times-more-14th-street/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">improved by up to 36%</a> after implementation. As a regular M14 rider, I know firsthand how smooth and efficient the bus ride is on 14th Street. Now it’s time to keep going. We should start with a new busway on 34th Street in my district that has great potential to speed up one of the slowest bus lines.<strong><br></strong></p></li></ul><h5><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary)">Pilot a Free Bus to LaGuardia</span></h5><ul><li><p>Getting to LaGuardia from Manhattan is a nightmare. It’s about time there was a free shuttle to LaGuardia Airport. I’m proposing we pilot a free shuttle bus from Manhattan to LaGuardia to make less New Yorkers dread getting to the airport.<strong><br></strong></p></li></ul><h5><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary)">Give All Manhattan Students Access to OMNY Cards</span></h5><ul><li><p>It’s great that NYC Schools and the MTA have expanded access to student OMNY cards, but there are still students who are excluded from the program, like those who live within one half mile of their school. Those students still need to get around after school. That’s why I’m calling on the MTA to give ALL students access to the student OMNY card program 7 days a week and 365 days a year.<strong><br></strong></p></li></ul><p><a href="https://x.com/KeithPowersNYC/status/1909230345880293485" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Read Keith’s Plan for Faster Bus Service</a></p>

<h5><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary)">New Yorkers deserve to feel safe in their communities and on public transit, plain and simple.</span></h5><p>It’s time that we implement innovative and sensible solutions to public safety that will make Manhattan safer:</p><ul><li><p><strong>New neighborhood foot patrols </strong>to eliminate disorder and chaos on the ground, emulating the successes we’ve had on 14th Street and 1st Avenue.</p></li><li><p><strong>Boost headcount at neighborhood precincts</strong> to make sure resources are on the ground solving crimes.</p></li><li><p><strong>Add additional resources into our subway system </strong>because every New Yorker deserves to feel secure on public transit.</p></li><li><p><strong>Tackle the problem of repeat offenders </strong>because we know a small portion of individuals commit a disproportionate number of crimes.</p></li></ul><p><a href="https://www.amny.com/opinion/state-legislators-public-safety-mental-health/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Read Keith's Plan for Public Safety</a></p>

<h5><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary)">It’s time for our leaders to step up and take action now to address New Yorkers’ concerns about the homelessness and mental health crisis facing our city.</span><br></h5><p>During Keith’s tenure in the Council, he was praised for “showing us how to treat the homeless like neighbors rather than enemies,” as described by the New York Times.<strong><br></strong></p><p>As Borough President, he’ll deliver a Marshall Plan on the homelessness and mental health crisis that’s leaving New Yorkers in fear of riding the subway and walking in their neighborhoods:</p><ul><li><p><strong>Increase the number of mental health beds.</strong> Once we get this vulnerable population off the street, we need to invest in the resources necessary to deliver quality care. That means adding mental health beds to meet the demonstrated need.</p></li><li><p><strong>Update New York’s involuntary commitment standards.</strong> This would ensure more at-risk individuals get the care they need, while simultaneously keeping the broader public safe. The most caring and compassionate way to solve this problem is to get this population the treatment they need rather than being resigned to our streets or subway system without any intervention.</p></li><li><p><strong>Fully staff our agencies with outreach workers,</strong> so we’re able to make direct contact with 100% of the street homeless population on a regular basis.</p></li><li><p><strong>Create better discharge plans</strong> to ensure this vulnerable population doesn’t end up back on the street.</p></li></ul>

It’s time we fix that.</p><p>Keith’s plan will:</p><ul><li><p><strong>Create a nation-leading 2K program in NYC</strong> so new families have the tools they need to set their children up for success.</p></li><li><p><strong>Work to achieve universal Pre-K and 3K</strong> for every child in the five boroughs.</p></li><li><p><strong>Expand after school programming</strong> to help working families, including access to these programs within reasonable proximity to where they live.</p></li></ul>

<h5><strong><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary)">Donald Trump is an existential threat to New York City and our entire country.</span></strong></h5><p>He’s laser focused on implementing a radical agenda modeled after Project 2025 to send our nation back 50 years.&nbsp;</p><p>At this pivotal moment for our country, we need leaders who will stand up to Trump’s administration to protect our immigrant communities, New York’s bank account, essential government services like SNAP, Medicare, and Medicaid, congestion pricing, and more.</p><p>Keith has the platform we need to fight back:</p><ul><li><p><strong>Divest</strong> from Tesla and Elon Musk.</p></li><li><p><strong>Create a blue state compact</strong> to pool resources to fight Trump and rejoin critical coalitions like the World Health Organization and Paris Climate Agreement.</p></li><li><p><strong>Protect our budget </strong>by creating a rainy day fund to limit the impact of harmful cuts from Trump’s administration.</p></li><li><p><strong>Safeguard </strong>Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.</p></li><li><p><strong>Further bolster reproductive healthcare</strong> to make New York City the nation’s leader in protecting a woman’s right to choose.</p></li></ul>
